Tucked into the Berkeley-Orinda Hills just 20 minutes east of San Francisco, Siesta Valley Bowl is a 700+ capacity outdoor amphitheater set among redwood groves and oak-studded hillsides on a protected East Bay Municipal Water District watershed. The venue occupies the site long known as the Bruns Memorial Amphitheater, home to the California Shakespeare Theater (Cal Shakes) for over three decades until the company's dissolution in 2024. In November 2025, EBMUD approved a 15-year lease of the nine-acre property to the nonprofit Siesta Valley Foundation, paving the way for its restoration as Siesta Valley Bowl — reopening in the spring of 2026 with a renewed mission of culture, conservation, and community. The venue is led by co-founders Tom Romary (Chairman) and Michael Karp (President) of Siesta Valley Bowl, Inc., alongside Campbell Foster (COO), who also founded the Siesta Valley Foundation, together partnering with EBMUD to bring the site back to life.
Since welcoming its first audiences in the spring of 2026 — including an inaugural performance by proto-punk legend Jonathan Richman — Siesta Valley Bowl has built a season of 25 shows spanning rock, jazz, blues, funk, soul, bluegrass, country, Latin, classical, and pop. The venue operates through a public-private partnership between Siesta Valley Bowl, Inc., the Siesta Valley Foundation, and EBMUD, with talent booking led by Blue Note Entertainment Group. Every ticket sold supports the Foundation's work restoring the watershed and expanding access to the performing arts for the surrounding East Bay community — carrying forward Cal Shakes' original mission in a new form.
